Abu Dhabi has a large and growing number of British-curriculum schools, regulated by ADEK (the Department of Education and Knowledge). Like schools in Dubai, many of them use a cognitive-ability test to understand how pupils reason, separately from what they’ve been taught. CAT4 is one of the most common choices, though not the only one.

Where a school uses CAT4, it’s usually for one or more of three things: a baseline when a child joins, tracking progress every year or two, and sometimes as part of an entry assessment. Timing varies by school. The school office can tell you whether, and when, your child will sit it.

What CAT4 asks children to do

Four kinds of reasoning, each tested with two question types.

Verbal reasoning

Which word belongs with a group, and word analogies. It tests reasoning with words rather than vocabulary size, which matters for children learning in English as an additional language.

Quantitative reasoning

Number series and number analogies. Spotting the rule matters more than curriculum maths; basic arithmetic is enough.

Non-verbal reasoning

Figure classification and figure matrices. Shapes and patterns only, so it depends least on language or schooling.

Spatial reasoning

Paper folding and finding a shape hidden inside another. The battery children have usually practised least.

Do schools in Abu Dhabi use CAT4?
Many British-curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi use CAT4 or a similar cognitive-ability test, but not all of them. Ask your child's school directly about their own policy and timing.
Is CAT4 in English?
Yes. The verbal battery needs reading in English. The non-verbal and spatial batteries use shapes only, which is one reason schools with many children learning English value CAT4.
