Non-verbal reasoning practice that feels like a game

Figure matrices, classification, recognition, paper-fold analysis — the non-verbal sub-tests CAT4 and 11+ exams use. Free during the beta.

Non-verbal reasoning is the part of a cognitive ability test that doesn’t depend on reading skill. It measures pattern-spotting and spatial visualisation directly — which is exactly why schools use it alongside verbal and numerical reasoning.

For most children it’s the area with the steepest learning curve, because the question types are unfamiliar from regular schoolwork. Puzzitron covers every NVR sub-test the CAT4 uses, calibrated D1 → D2 → D3, in short replayable runs your child will actually want to come back to.

Free during the beta. No ads, no third-party trackers where your child plays, UK/EU hosted.

  • Every NVR sub-test. Figure classification, figure matrices, figure analysis (paper folds), figure recognition (hidden shapes).
  • Three difficulty bands. D1 single- rule introduction, D2 two-step, D3 stretch — every sub-test, every level.
  • Replayable. Every run is a fresh pick from the bank. No "I’ve done this question already" boredom.
  • Safe by default. No ads, no third-party trackers where your child plays, UK/EU hosted.
  • Free during the beta. No subscription. Free tier won’t be crippled when paid arrives.

Non-verbal sub-tests covered

Every NVR question type in the CAT4 has a Puzzitron sub-test that practises it directly.

Figure classification

Pick the shape that fits the group. Same/different in shape, colour, fill, size — D1 entry, building to multi-rule combinations at D3.

Figure matrices

Complete the missing cell of a 2×2 or 3×3 grid. Row + column rules combine; the classic CAT4 NVR sub-test.

Figure recognition

Find the target shape hidden inside one of the option figures. Distractors get progressively closer to the target as difficulty rises.

Figure analysis (paper folds)

Imagine the paper folded then cut, then unfolded. The classic spatial-reasoning sub-test that CAT4 includes alongside NVR.

Frequently asked

What ages is non-verbal reasoning practice for?
Non-verbal reasoning starts being formally tested from Year 3 in many UK schools and is a core component of CAT4 (Year 4–6) and most 11+ exams (end of Year 6). Puzzitron's NVR sub-tests are designed for ages 7–11.
What's the difference between figure matrices and figure classification?
Figure classification asks 'which option belongs with this group of similar shapes?'. Figure matrices show a grid of shapes with one missing and asks 'which option completes the pattern?'. Both practise the same underlying skill (rule-spotting in shapes) at different levels of formal structure.
How is paper-fold analysis different from the rest of NVR?
Paper-fold analysis is technically spatial reasoning rather than non-verbal reasoning, but it usually appears alongside NVR in CAT4 and 11+ exams. Puzzitron covers it as its own sub-test (figure-analysis) so children meet the question type before exam day rather than at the start of one.
Is the bank big enough?
Currently around 300 hand-curated questions across all 8 sub-tests, with regular adds via the algorithmic generator. The picker biases toward sub-tests your child has seen less of, so a child who plays mostly NVR sees fresh content for weeks. The bank grows as the beta runs.
Is it free?
Yes — completely free during the beta. An enhanced paid version (one-off payment, no subscription) is on its way; the free tier won't be crippled.
What about my child's data?
Minimum data needed for the app to work — first name, three-word handle, hashed PIN, practice history. No third-party trackers where your child plays, UK/EU hosted, ICO Children's Code aligned.
